Love Your Neighbor as Yourself But What If You Don’t Love You?
When Jesus was asked about the greatest commandment, His answer was layered:
Love God with everything you have.
Love your neighbor as yourself.
That second part assumes something big:
🧐That you love yourself.
But what if you don’t? What if you’re faithful to everyone else but abandon yourself in the process?
You show up for others. You sacrifice. You pour out. But inside, you’re depleted… resentful… tired.
Here’s the truth we don’t like to say out loud:
You cannot sustainably love others better than you love yourself.
Faithfulness to self isn’t selfish.
It’s foundational.
Because when I’m faithful to me, I’m more present with my husband. Be more patient with my children. More obedient to God. Self-neglect doesn’t make us holy.
It makes us hollow. It turns us into people pleasers and people chasers.
